About Us
We are a community of passionate people who came together to make the most of where we live and work. We formed in 2012 as one of 150 Big Locals in the UK and given £1m by national lottery to improve our area over a 10 year period, and became a charity in 2022. Teams, Derwentwater Road, and Raceourse were identified as the areas to benefit from this programme, and from the word go we have been working to bring together all the local talent, ambitions, skills, and energy from individuals, groups, and organisations to make a positive difference to this community.
We run a community hall out of the Victoria Road Scout Centre, and a community allotment off Bensham bank, and a small health hub on Rose Street, all of which provide space for various clubs, groups, and events all through the year.
The 4 key community aims of Big Local Gateshead are:
· Communities will be better able to identify local needs and take action in response to them.
· People will have increased skills and confidence, so that they continue to identify and respond to needs in the future.
· The community will make a difference to the needs it prioritises.
· People will feel that their area is an even better place to live.
