The Veg Kits are Back!

We are offering our popular vegetable growing kits again this year for residents living in the Big Local Gateshead area. We want to support as many of you as possible to grow vegetables at home, so you can enjoy all the benefits of growing some of your own food!

If you want to grow food at home again this year, or would like to have a go for the first time, our kits have all you need to get started. Last year lots of residents got involved and I hope that more of you will join in this year! We have outdoor vegetable growing kits or indoor/yard salad and herb planters available, and all kits come with instructions and everything you need to get growing. Read on to find out what’s included in each kit and how to pre-order your kit now, they will be available to collect from Friday the 9th of April.

Outdoor vegetable growing kit contains:

  • 10 x split canes

  • Pea or French bean seedlings

  • Herb plant x 1 (marjoram, oregano or rosemary)

  • A variety of vegetable seed packets:

    • Spring onion

    • Courgette

    • Carrot

    • Broccoli

    • Radish

    • Chives

    • Lettuce

    • Beetroot

    • Rocket

Indoor herb and salad kit contains:

  • Window box/trough planter

  • Enough compost to fill the planter

  • Pea gravel for drainage

  • Herb plant x 1 (marjoram, oregano or rosemary)

  • A variety of herb/salad seed packets:

    • Sorrell

    • Flat leaf parsley

    • Dill

    • Coriander

    • Tomatoes (patio pot variety)

Initially, there will be 20 indoor kits and 30 outdoor kits available and each costs £7 to produce. We Just ask for a donation of whatever you can afford towards the cost.
They will be available for collection starting on Friday the 9th of April at the Big Local Pop-up Shop on Friday’s between 2pm - 4pm at the Big Local Bungalow on Derwentwater Road, NE8 2HQ.

There are more collection options to follow soon and in exceptional circumstances, we will attempt to arrange delivery.

Community Seed Bank

New this year, we have a seed sharing scheme on offer too! Anyone can donate their unwanted or unused seeds and we will re-distribute them across the community to help make growing at home more affordable.

You can bring seeds for donation to our Pop-up Shop - Friday’s between 2pm and 4pm at the Big Local Bungalow on Derwentwater Road, NE8 2HQ. If you can’t make it along but still want to help you can post seeds to the same address!

In the coming weeks, as restrictions ease, we will offer more days and times for dropping off seeds and collecting vegetable kits. Keep an eye out on our Facebook pages for any updates.
